Musk’s Outburst at 2023 DealBook Summit
At the 2023 DealBook Summit in New York, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of the micro-blogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter), made an explosive entrance into the headlines. His expletive-filled reaction, broadcasted on live TV, was directed at the growing number of advertisers abandoning X over antisemitic posts he had amplified on the platform.
The White House’s Condemnation and Musk’s Apology
Following his endorsement of content labeled by the White House as “antisemitic and racist hate,” Musk faced significant backlash. This prompted him to issue an apology and delete the controversial tweet. However, the damage seemed to have been done, with a significant exodus of advertisers from the platform.
Advertisers’ Exodus and Musk’s Reaction
During an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, Musk addressed the issue of advertisers leaving X. In a profanity-laced statement, he claimed that this boycott could spell the end for the company. His remarks also touched upon Disney CEO Bob Iger, as Disney joined the ranks of companies like Airbnb, Coca-Cola, and Microsoft in withdrawing their ads from X.
The Financial Impact
A report from The New York Times estimated that X could be risking up to $75 million in revenue due to over 200 advertisers pulling out. Media Matters further highlighted the issue by reporting the presence of ads from companies like Apple and IBM next to posts glorifying Hitler and the Nazi Party on X.
The Broader Advertising Retreat
According to NPR, since Musk’s takeover, X has seen 50 of its top 100 advertisers leave. This list includes prominent brands such as Ford, Verizon, Chevrolet, Chipotle, and pharmaceutical giants like Merck. The departure of these advertisers reflects a broader concern about the platform’s direction under Musk’s leadership.
FCC Violation and Potential Consequences
Crypto adviser Aubrey Strobel pointed out that CNBC, which aired Musk’s outburst, did not anticipate his remarks, leading to a breach of FCC guidelines. This incident could potentially result in a fine for the network, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing controversy.
