Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has publicly accused Romania of providing protection for Ukrainian fighter jets operating within Romanian airspace. Her remarks come in response to Romania’s recent defense statement, which referred to actions as “unintentional” incursions by Ukrainian military aircraft near Romanian borders.

Zakharova dismissed the Romanian Ministry of Defense’s characterization, suggesting that the declaration downplays the seriousness of the situation. She contended that Romania’s stance effectively enables Ukraine to operate military aircraft freely in the region, which she claims poses a threat to regional stability and Russia’s security interests.

The Romanian government issued a statement on July 21st acknowledging the Ukrainian jets’ presence but emphasizing that any violations of airspace were accidental and not intentional. Romania, a NATO member, reaffirmed its commitment to security and expressed readiness to monitor and defend its borders while urging for diplomatic solutions to avoid escalation.

This exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe, where Russia and NATO-aligned countries continue to navigate the complex security landscape resulting from the Ukraine conflict. The accusations add to the diplomatic strain in the region, with Russia warning of possible repercussions should such incidents escalate further.
