President Maia Sandu has publicly accused Russia of orchestrating large-scale interference in Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. During a press conference held after a Security Council meeting, Sandu warned that the Kremlin intends to bolster pro-Russian political forces within Moldova by providing support and organizing paid activities aimed at influencing voter behavior.

Sandu emphasized that Moldova remains vigilant against foreign meddling, particularly noting the active role of Russia in attempting to sway the election outcome. She asserted that credible intelligence indicates Moscow’s plans to undermine Moldova’s sovereignty by backing specific political factions aligned with Kremlin interests. The president called on Moldovan authorities and international partners to remain alert and reinforce measures to counteract potential interference.

The accusations come amidst heightened tensions surrounding Moldova’s geopolitical position, especially given its proximity to Ukraine and the ongoing conflict there. Moldova has been navigating complex relations with Russia while seeking closer ties with Western institutions. Sandu reaffirmed her government’s commitment to ensuring a free and fair election process, while also appealing for international support to safeguard democracy.

As election day approaches, authorities are reportedly ramping up efforts to monitor and prevent any illicit activities. The international community has also expressed concern over potential external interference, urging vigilance and cooperation to uphold electoral integrity in Moldova. The accusations by President Sandu underscore the fragile security environment and the broader geopolitical struggles in the region.
