Kyiv, October 27 — Ukrainian security authorities have thwarted a Russian espionage operation aimed at sabotaging Ukrainian air defenses. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that they arrested a Russian spy embedded within the Ukrainian Air Force who was actively preparing attacks on vital airbases using advanced fighter jets, including F-16 and Mirage 2000 aircraft.
The detained individual is identified as a major and a flight instructor within a Ukrainian Air Force brigade. According to the SBU, he was recruited by Russian intelligence and supplied sensitive military information, including details about airfield security protocols and aircraft deployment strategies. The mole’s role was crucial in providing the Kremlin with intelligence to facilitate targeted attacks on Ukrainian airfields, potentially aiming to weaken Ukraine’s aerial defense capabilities.
Authorities revealed that the suspect had been under investigation for some time before his arrest. During interrogation, he confessed to passing classified information to Russian agents, acknowledging his betrayal.
