A tragic boat accident off the coast of Yemen’s Abyan province has claimed the lives of at least 76 refugees, with dozens still reported missing, according to AFP. The incident occurred as a vessel carrying Ethiopian migrants apparently capsized or sank amid perilous conditions in the Arabian Sea.

The United Nations reports that the boat was carrying approximately 157 refugees, most of whom were Ethiopian nationals seeking to escape hardship and conflict at home. Only 12 individuals survived the disaster, highlighting the high fatality rate associated with these dangerous journeys across the waters. Rescue efforts are ongoing, though the challenging terrain and weather conditions have hindered search operations.

This tragedy underscores the ongoing peril faced by refugees and migrants attempting to reach safer countries through perilous sea routes. The Yemeni coast has long been a transit point for migrants fleeing violence and poverty in the Horn of Africa, often risking their lives in overcrowded vessels. Humanitarian agencies have called for increased rescue efforts and more robust maritime safety measures to prevent further loss of life.

As authorities continue to investigate the incident, survivors and local communities remain in mourning. The international community has urged greater cooperation to address the root causes of migration and improve safety protocols for vulnerable travelers, as the desperation driving these journeys persists amidst ongoing regional instability.
