Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly rejected Russia’s proposal to include China as a security guarantor in the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine. The proposal, which was suggested amidst ongoing negotiations to halt hostilities, has been met with skepticism by Kyiv officials. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine considers certain international actors, including Western allies, as more appropriate guarantors given their support and strategic interests in the region.

The idea of involving China as a security guarantor stems from diplomatic efforts to establish a sustainable ceasefire and peace framework. Russia has expressed interest in expanding the number of guarantors, citing China’s growing global influence. However, Ukraine remains wary of China’s position and potential interests, especially given its complex relationship with Moscow and the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian officials reaffirm their preference for security arrangements involving countries that have demonstrated clear backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty. The Ukrainian government has reiterated its commitment to securing long-term peace through established international mechanisms, while also emphasizing the importance of respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity. As diplomatic talks continue, the debate over the role of various international actors remains a focal point in the broader conflict resolution efforts.
