Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Tuesday that Russia requires approximately four more years to achieve full control over Ukraine’s Donbas region. Addressing the ongoing conflict, Zelensky emphasized that despite nearly four years of warfare, Russian forces have only managed to occupy about a third of Donetsk, a key part of Donbas.

Zelensky dismissed claims that Russia might complete its occupation of the Donbas by the end of this year, describing such assertions as “nonsense.” He underscored the resilience of Ukrainian forces and the complexity of the conflict, suggesting that a significant period remains before Russia can fully seize the region.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014, intensifying with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The region remains a focal point of hostilities, with Ukrainian officials consistently asserting their determination to defend sovereignty amid ongoing Russian military efforts. Zelensky’s remarks underscore the ongoing uncertainty and the lengthy timeline anticipated for resolving the territorial disputes in Donbas.
