The European Union is reportedly considering new restrictions on the movement of Russian diplomats within the Schengen area, as part of its ongoing efforts to impose sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine. These measures are included in the bloc’s proposed 19th package of sanctions, aimed at exerting diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia.
Czechia’s Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský was among officials discussing the potential restrictions, which would limit Russian diplomats’ ability to travel freely across Schengen countries. The move reflects the EU’s broader strategy to respond to Russia’s actions and to tighten restrictions on diplomatic engagements.
If implemented, the restrictions would mark a significant shift in the EU’s diplomatic posture, aiming to reduce Russian influence and protest Russia’s stance on the conflict. The precise details of the proposal, including the scope and enforcement mechanisms, are still under discussion among EU member states.
The EU has previously enacted a series of sanctions against Russia, targeting individuals, entities, and sectors. The inclusion of travel restrictions on Russian diplomats signals an escalation in the EU’s diplomatic measures, though negotiations among member states continue to determine the final form of any new restrictions.
