The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have formally notified the UN Security Council of their intention to activate the snapback mechanism against Iran. This process, enshrined in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allows member states to re-impose UN sanctions that were lifted as part of the nuclear deal if Iran violates its commitments.

The decision comes amid ongoing concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities and regional conduct, which have persisted despite efforts to maintain the agreement. By triggering the snapback, the three European countries aim to tighten restrictions and increase pressure on Iran to comply with international requirements.

If France and the UK proceed along this path, the UN sanctions that had been suspended could be reintroduced within approximately 30 days. The move would mark a significant escalation in the international community’s response to Iran’s actions, potentially affecting diplomatic negotiations and regional stability.

The United States has shown support for the initial step, although its stance on the snapback mechanism has been complex, given its unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018. The activation of the snapback would represent a notable development in the ongoing efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program and regional behavior.
