Russia and China have taken a significant step in expanding their energy partnership with the signing of a memorandum to develop the “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline. The new pipeline aims to increase Russian natural gas supplies to China, further strengthening the long-term energy relationship between the two countries.

In addition to the direct pipeline to China, plans include constructing a transit route through Mongolia, potentially expanding regional energy connectivity. Russian energy giant Gazprom announced that the project will enhance the capacity of existing pipelines and boost exports to meet China’s growing energy needs.

The development of the “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline is notable for its scale and cost. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller described it as potentially the “most expensive” pipeline in the world, highlighting the project’s significant investment and technical challenges. The pipeline’s construction is expected to take several years, with the goal of increasing Russian gas exports and diversifying supply routes.

This move aligns with China’s broader strategy to secure reliable energy sources amid global shifts in supply and demand. Both countries see the pipeline as a means to bolster economic ties and ensure energy security, amid fluctuating international markets and geopolitical tensions.
