Zillow has requested a federal judge to deny a motion by real estate brokerage Compass, which seeks a temporary restraining order preventing Zillow from enforcing its policy that excludes listings publicly marketed elsewhere first. The policy aims to prevent duplicate or potentially misleading property listings, according to Zillow.

Compass filed the motion earlier, arguing that Zillow’s policy unfairly restricts access to certain listings and could harm consumers and its business. The company claims that Zillow’s approach limits listings availability and conflicts with rules promoting transparency in the housing market.

In its response, Zillow emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent policies across its platform and indicated that enforcement of its listing standards is necessary to ensure a reliable user experience. Zillow also argued that Compass has not demonstrated sufficient evidence to justify the temporary injunction.

The legal dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the real estate technology sector regarding listing practices and platform policies. A hearing on the matter is expected to be scheduled, during which the judge will consider whether to grant Compass’s request for a temporary restraining order.
