China has reportedly violated the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) near Scarborough Shoal once again, drawing concerns over maritime sovereignty. The incident involves Chinese vessels entering waters officially designated as part of the Philippines’ EEZ, a zone within 200 nautical miles of its coast where it has sovereign rights for exploration and resource management.

Recently, Chinese state media has circulated images showing its coast guard assisting a stranded Filipino fisherman, framing the act as humanitarian aid. However, experts assert that these images are part of a public relations effort aimed at softening China’s image amid ongoing maritime disputes. Critics note that China had no lawful basis to conduct patrols or exert authority in those waters, given that the area is under Philippine jurisdiction according to international law.

The Scarborough Shoal has long been a flashpoint in territorial disagreements between China and the Philippines, with Beijing’s claims overlapping with Manila’s EEZ. The situation has raised concerns about regional stability and the adherence to international legal frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Philippine officials continue to call for respect of its sovereignty and the peaceful resolution of the dispute.
