Lithuania’s former Minister of Defence and Member of the European Parliament, Rasa Jukneviciene, has emphasized the unlikelihood of engaging directly with certain authoritarian regimes. She stated that attempts to establish dialogue or diplomacy with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government are futile, asserting “it is NOT possible” to meaningfully engage with them.

Jukneviciene drew parallels to Iran, particularly highlighting the Iranian leadership under the Ayatollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). She stressed that similar to Russia, diplomatic efforts with Iran’s regime have limited prospects for success, given their restrictive and uncompromising nature.

Her comments reflect a cautious stance on diplomacy with regimes she views as non-representative of the people’s interests and characterized by a reluctance for genuine engagement. The statement underscores ongoing debates within Europe and beyond about the effectiveness of dialogue with authoritarian governments.

These remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, with Western nations debating their approaches to Russia and Iran amid conflicts and regional challenges. Jukneviciene’s viewpoint adds to the discourse on the limits of diplomacy with regimes known for their rigidity and refusal to engage on certain issues.
