Since a cyberattack targeted Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) a month ago, Venezuela’s oil industry has been sustaining its daily operations through alternative methods. Industry officials and workers have relied heavily on phone calls and handwritten reports to coordinate activities and monitor production, amid ongoing technological disruptions.

The attack, which disrupted IT systems and digital communication channels, has significantly impacted the company’s ability to manage its extensive oil operations. Authorities have yet to disclose detailed information about the nature or source of the cyber assault, but the outage has underscored vulnerabilities within Venezuela’s critical infrastructure.

Despite these challenges, PDVSA continues to produce and export oil, although officials acknowledge that the operational efficiency has been affected. The Venezuelan government has stated that efforts are underway to restore digital systems and bolster cybersecurity measures to prevent future incidents.

The incident highlights the increasing threat of cyberattacks on national infrastructure in the region and raises concerns about the resilience of Venezuela’s oil industry amid ongoing economic and political challenges.
