The Adani Group’s power division and Torrent Power have each secured significant contracts from the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh to develop new coal-fired power plants, collectively valued at approximately $3.7 billion. These agreements are part of Madhya Pradesh’s ongoing efforts to expand its energy capacity and meet increasing domestic electricity demand.

According to official sources, the contracts involve the construction and commissioning of multiple coal-based power stations within the state. The projects are expected to enhance local power supply and contribute to Madhya Pradesh’s goal of enhancing energy security, while also aligning with broader national strategies to bolster coal-based electricity generation.

Industry analysts note that the large-scale investment reflects growing capacity expansion in the Indian power sector, with a focus on coal-fired plants to address power shortages. Both Adani and Torrent Power are prominent players in India’s energy market, with established portfolios in thermal power, renewable energy, and other sectors.

The development raises discussions about India’s energy mix, environmental concerns, and the future role of coal in India’s energy landscape. State officials have indicated that these projects will adhere to environmental regulations and include provisions for pollution mitigation, although detailed environmental impact assessments are yet to be publicly disclosed.
