Approximately 500 tractors and 10,000 farmers from various European Union member states assembled today outside the European Parliament in Brussels to protest the EU’s proposed free trade agreement with Mercosur, a South American trade bloc that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The demonstrators expressed concerns over the potential impact of the agreement on local agriculture, fearing it may lead to increased imports of cheaper agricultural products, which could threaten European farmers’ livelihoods.

The protest took place in Luxembourg Square, situated directly in front of the European Parliament building, highlighting the farmers’ desire for policymakers to reconsider or revise the terms of the trade deal. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans advocating for the protection of European farming industries and emphasizing the importance of sustainable trade practices.

The EU-Mercosur agreement, aimed at reducing tariffs and improving market access, has faced criticism from various sectors within Europe. Agriculturists argue that it could exacerbate competition from South American producers, potentially undermining local agricultural businesses. European officials have maintained that the agreement will offer economic benefits and strengthen trade ties, though negotiations continue to be a contentious issue among different stakeholders.
