A recent United Nations report has identified Jakarta as the world’s most populous city, with a population of approximately 42 million residents. This marks a significant milestone for the Indonesian capital, which previously ranked lower among major urban centers globally.

Following Jakarta, Dhaka in Bangladesh holds the second spot with an estimated 37 million inhabitants, while Tokyo, Japan, ranks third with around 33 million residents. The report indicates that Dhaka is projected to overtake Jakarta by 2050, potentially reaching a population of 52 million.

The rise of these megacities reflects ongoing urbanization trends across Asia, driven by factors such as rural-to-urban migration, economic development, and population growth. Authorities and planners face increasing challenges related to infrastructure, housing, and sustainable development in these rapidly expanding urban areas.

The findings highlight shifting demographic patterns and underscore the importance of adaptive urban planning to accommodate future growth in the world’s largest cities.
